• Pop!_Planet is still very much under development. Data for the wiki is being sourced from the Arch Linux and Ubuntu wikis, along with a bunch of completely unique content specific to Pop!_OS, and sourcing, converting and updating that content takes time; please be patient. If you can't find what you're looking for here, check the Arch Linux and Ubuntu wikis.
  • Welcome!

I'll get straight to the point.

When I started Pop!_Planet, I launched it because I saw a need for a centralized community for Pop!_OS. To be frank, I never expected the level of popularity it has achieved. Over the last year, we have gone from under 50 users, to almost 400 users. That's awesome! However... it also comes with a downside. We are rapidly running out of disk space on our server, and the bandwidth costs go up every month.

Pop!_Planet is not affiliated with System76 in any way, and is funded completely out of pocket. From day one, I said that I'd never use on-site ads (I hate them as much as you do), so the only monetization we get is through donations. Right now, the donations we receive don't even cover our overhead.

I know that most users will ignore this message, and that's ok. However, if even a few of our users are willing and able to donate a few dollars to help offset our expenses, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes I get a black screen instead of the login

Jun 14, 2020

On Pop OS 20.04 sometimes when I get out of sleep I have just a black screen. I might get it also just when I get out of the lockout. The login screen does not appear I just have a black screen.
I use 2 screens, the first one is a laptop screen reversed and an external monitor which is the primary one.
So I think that it's a GDM issue. Where to check what bugs? Is there any log file?

I am using the Nvidia proprietary driver. Maybe it's a driver issue but I don't know how to install the nouveau one and switch from Nouveau driver to the proprietary one.

I would like also to try the Nouveau driver but can't find on Pop OS this Ubuntu application to switch driver:

I have found this help page:

I have a Nvidia 1050 GTX video card and I followed these steps:
1/ I reinstalled the video driver
sudo apt purge ~nnvidia
sudo apt autoremove
sudo apt clean
And then :
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
sudo apt install system76-driver-nvidia
2/ I reinstalled the login manager
sudo apt install --reinstall gdm3 pop-desktop gnome-shell
sudo systemctl reboot
And I must admit that I am quite surprised ! No more crash since then. I have put into the sleep mode my PC at least 10 times since then and no crash, no black screen!
What a wonderfull news! I was about to reinstall all my computer and switch back to Ubuntu...
